I’d like to start by thanking all of you for joining us today for Adelphi University’s Master of Science in Sport Management webinar series. Before we get started, I’d like to cover a few housekeeping items. In order to minimize background noise, the presentation is in broadcast only mode, so that you can hear us, but we cannot hear you. I’d also recommend, at this time, having something to write with, so you can write your questions and add them to the Q&A box located on the left of your screen during the question and answer section at the end of the webcast.
We will do our best to answer as many questions as possible during the Q&A session. If we are unable to answer all of your questions, a representative from our office will follow up with you to help answer them at a later time. Finally, we are recording this webcast, and it will be emailed to you after the presentation, as well as posted to our website once it is available. During this webcast, you will have a chance to learn more about Adelphi University, the concentrations that are offered within the MS in Sport Management program, future career outcomes, student successes after completing this program, as well as how to get started on your application. Now, I’d like to pass it over to our presenter, Ms. Jennifer Majczan.
Jennifer Majczan: Hello, everyone. My name is Jennifer Majczan. I am an enrollment advisor in the Graduate Admissions Office, and I work specifically with students that are interested in pursuing the Master of Science in Sports Management program. I have worked in higher education for about 4½ years. My favorite part of my position is learning about students’ experiences and their long-term goals to see if a sport management program is gonna be a right fit for what you’re looking for in a graduate program. I look forward to presenting information about the program and answer any questions that you may have. Now, let’s get started.
Adelphi University was founded in 1896 and is a private, co-educational collegiate university that offers excellent and highly relevant programs, where students prepare for lives of active citizenship and professional careers. We are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which is also recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Our mission is to provide quality graduate education to offer professional preparation.

Adam Hanna: All right, Jen, can you tell us a little bit more about what sport management is?
Jennifer Majczan: Sport management helps to develop the professional skills and personal leadership strategies that are needed to thrive within the sport industry. Adelphi University’s Sport Management curriculum introduces sport industry management strategies and marketing concepts. Curriculum enhances communication, leadership skills, and ensures students have the knowledge and abilities to succeed in their chosen path. Upon completion, students become equipped to work with sports team, sports marketing associations, product manufacturing companies, or sport events and facilities.
Adelphi University has placed sport management graduates within virtually every major sports team within the New York metropolitan area, as well as a variety of colleges and universities and other types of sport entities. ____ because we’ve started offering this program in an online format, we’ve also been able to connect graduates with other potential teams and sport organizations across the U.S., as well as internationally. In addition, Adelphi University is one of the rare Tier 1 universities to offer two concentrations within the sport management program. They are sport marketing and collegiate athletic administration. Both concentrations provide an in-depth look at business and sports. The next few slides will take a deeper dive into each concentration.
Adam Hanna: First, Jennifer will discuss our sport marketing concentration.
Jennifer Majczan: In my position, many students will ask what sport marketing consists of. Here’s a little bit of a background. Sport marketing is a subdivision of marketing, which focuses both on the promotion of sport events and teams, as well as the promotion of other products and services, through sporting events and sport teams. Sports marketing uses sports, in any form, to sell goods and services. This particular style of marketing focuses more about using the content of sports to assist marketing efforts. However, this is not limited to professional sports, and may include college athletics, minor leagues, or alternative sports.
This work can be watched on a variety of platforms. Sport marketing can take many different forms, as well. Teams sell advertising space inside their stadiums to marketers who want to purchase billboards and other print ads, while TV networks sell air time during the events. Famous athletes also sign contracts to work as celebrity endorsers and lend their images to marketers. The biggest advantage of sport marketing is that it allows marketers to piggyback on the popularity and devotion many fans feel towards their favorite teams and athletes. A few topics that are discussed within the sport marketing concentration ranges from merchandising to product branding, promotional campaigning, and market research.
Adam Hanna: Now, Jen’s going to talk a little bit more about our second concentration, which is the collegiate athletic administration.
Jennifer Majczan: Oftentimes, students are looking for programs that range from sport administration, coaching, or athletic administration. This is where I suggest looking into our collegiate athletic administration concentration. The reason is this concentration is geared towards professionals that are coaches, assistant coaches, athletic directors, trainers, administrators, any professional that is looking to achieve the highest level in collegiate sports. Colleges and universities employ from hundreds of staff to dozens, depending on the size of the school.
Positions in college athletic departments range from coaching to marketing, communication, administration, finance and accounting, recruiting, and so on, and so forth. This concentration covers topics ranging from sports law and compliance, facility and event management, and prepares individuals to deal with public relations, technology, develop and grow the athletic department within your school. The great thing is when applying to our program, you don’t need to make that decision right from the very beginning. Students are able to apply to the program as undecided because sometimes, you might have an interest in both areas.
In the first year of the program, students actually focus on their core and foundation courses first. By the second year, that’s when students would need to decide which concentration is going to be best suited for them. I suggest take it to the next level when speaking with professors. If you have a professor that has a background that interests you, reach out to them. Get some guidance. Also, do your own research on potential job settings or positions. When it comes to attending grad school, what you put into it is what you’re going to get out of it.
Adam Hanna: I know another common question is we’re always asked what type of positions can a student apply for once they’ve completed this program _____ sport management?
Jennifer Majczan: Here are some examples for both the sport marketing and collegiate athletic administration concentration can lead to, in terms of position titles and settings. For sport marketing, on the left, students can work in areas focusing in sales, analytics, marketing, public relations, business consulting or development. Graduates can work in a variety of settings, such as sport agencies, sport organization or associations, or merchandising companies. On the other side, for the collegiate athletic administration concentration, graduates can become assistant coaches to head coaches, athletic directors or sport information directors.
Oftentimes, students will already be working in their preferred field, but will utilize this degree to help them get to the next level. For example, going from a D3 to a D2, and so on and so forth. Some types of locations for these types of positions can be at the college level, recreational leagues, various sport organizations or associations. For those that will like to work in athletic department or coach in a K through 12 setting, I do suggest checking with your state or your county to make sure that the program would allow you to, since this program does not lead to any type of certification or licensure.
Adam Hanna: In addition to looking to see where students can go post-graduation, we also want to hear about what are some of our success stories? Where are our current graduates?
Jennifer Majczan: Here are a few examples of what previous students have accomplished from completing the sport management program at Adelphi University. To mention a few, there is George Statler, who owns and operates the Hockey Underground. George actually started his company from a project in his intro to sport management class. Now he sells hockey and baseball and softball equipment online, all over the world. Ann Rina has been the head of community relations for the New York Islanders for the last 14 years.
In addition, she has been a huge supporter of the Adelphi Sport Management program by helping place several students _____ experience over the years. Another one, David Martella, is currently the director of community relations for the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Lastly, Matt Schomburg is Australia’s national men’s head coach and founder of Fogolax Academy, which has placed
We’re able to work with students and get them connected with professional teams, but can also get students to start thinking outside the box. Like George, the Hockey Underground was once a class project, and now it’s turned into an international company.
Adam Hanna: Now, after having learned a little bit more about the program, you may be wondering how do you get started. What do I do with the application? Jen’s gonna talk a little bit more about some next steps to get you started.
Jennifer Majczan: What we require to be considered an applicant are the following. Students need to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. There are no requirements that you need to have a bachelor’s degree in a particular area. The graduate admissions office has worked with students that have backgrounds in education, business, marketing, exercise science, psychology, etc. We like students that come from various backgrounds because it brings different viewpoints into the classroom. The first step would be to start the online application through the link that has been provided. Starting the application will let us know to begin creating a file for you.
To apply for the online format, you will need to select the sportmanagement_online option. There is a $50 application fee. However, if you start your application for the fall 2017 session, application fees can be waived. It is for a limited time, so you do want to submit your application in order to take part in this opportunity. Ideally, we would like to see your personal statement and resume uploaded into your application a week after you started the process. The reason being is that these documents are ones that are pretty much within your control. Next would be ordering your official transcripts.
We need all official transcripts sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions. For example, you’ve taken a few courses at a community college and transferred to a university, we will need those official transcripts, as well. My suggestion is to order your transcripts as soon as possible, since it can take some time for them to be delivered to our office. In addition, we do require two letters of recommendation. Recommenders can range from a current supervisor, past supervisor, coach, volunteer coordinator, or past professor. Overall, we just don’t suggest friends or family. This process has been streamlined for our students.
The great thing is once you’ve confirmed who those recommenders are, within your application, you’ll be able to go back and add their names and email addresses. The graduate office will send the recommender an email prompting them to submit their letter on your behalf. On my end, I monitor your application and update you as documents are coming in. Once your application is completed, I’m able to present your application to the admissions committee. I would say on average, it takes about a week or a week and a half for you to receive a decision from the admissions committee.
Adam Hanna: Now, we just want to talk about a few important dates. Jen has touched on a few of them here, but as you can see on your screen, there are a few we want to talk about. Some important deadlines, as you look towards moving forward is first, with the application fees for fall. They are being waived, as Jen said, for a limited time, until Friday, September 15th. Students would need to submit their applications in order to take part in this opportunity, and if you have any questions, Jen can always help answer those _____. Additionally, the final application deadline for fall is Monday, September 18th.
Although this is the final application deadline, we would not suggest waiting until the last minute and submitting your documents. As Jen said, we know documents may take a little bit of time to get in, so work with her on that and get started on the other pieces as you wait for the transcripts to arrive. Lastly, classes for our fall session will begin on Monday, September 25th. Now, we’re gonna open it up for our question and answer section. At this time, if you have any questions, please feel free to type them into the Q&A box to the left of your screen.
We will wait just a few minutes to get those questions to come in, and then we will rejoin everyone to start going through those questions, so just give us a few minutes to take a look, and we’ll go ahead and start running through. All right, everyone, we’re gonna go ahead and get started with some questions. The first question here is are there internships available in the sport management program?
Jennifer Majczan: Yes, there are. At the end of the program, students do complete a capstone. However, they have a choice on how they want to go ahead and complete their capstone before graduating from the program. One option is you can take an extra elective as an extra class that’s not offered in your concentration. Another option is that you can work on an individual project with a faculty member of your choice. Or the third option is you can complete an internship in your own local community. Usually, what we do is we do have an admin that reaches out to students about six months prior, just to see if they need any particular guidance, in terms of getting an internship.
We do also – can write a letter of recommendation on your behalf. You can also utilize the career center, so that way you can upload your resume and also look into building a portfolio showing what you’ve learned throughout the graduate program, so on top of a resume, you can also present a portfolio.
Adam Hanna: Our next question is how long does this program take to complete?
Jennifer Majczan: This program takes as little as 24 months. Overall, it’s a part-time pace. We do suggest it for individuals that are working full time or have various commitments outside of work or have families because you focus on one class at a time.
Adam Hanna: Thank you, Jen. Our next question here is part of the application and some requirements. Is the GRE or GMAT required as part of the application?
Jennifer Majczan: No, actually, not at all. The program, I feel, is more accessible because we do not require any type of standardized exam. What we do require, again, is starting the online application, an updated copy of your resume, personal statement, two letters of recommendation, and then all official transcripts from all the schools that you have attended.
Adam Hanna: Our next question here that just came in, we have a student who is majoring in physical education and wondering if they can then pursue their master’s degree in sport management.
Jennifer Majczan: Actually, you can. The great thing is that we feel, especially with a physical education background, I think that’s something that can definitely help and have a little bit more of a connection with going into sport management, so you’ll already have that foundation. But overall, I’ve worked with students that have sport management in their undergrad, or business or marketing, or even healthcare management. I’ve worked with students from various different backgrounds that are looking to transition into the sport industry as their full-time career.
Adam Hanna: Thank you for that, Jen. Our next question is will there be required log-in times as part of the program?
Jennifer Majczan: Actually, no. What happens is students do receive a syllabus when classes first officially open up. I suggest looking ahead of time of your dates and your deadlines. There’s no required log-in times because we know students have different lifestyles, different work schedules, and also for the fact that it being online, different time zones, as well. Really just pay attention to when your assignments are due and making sure you’re submitting them on time because, obviously, if you don’t submit your assignments on time, that could dock points, and that eventually can hurt your grade, so just avoid that.
Adam Hanna: Thank you, Jen. Our next question here is in relation to the concentrations. For the collegiate athletic administration, do you already have to be a coach or trainer in order to pursue this programming concentration?
Jennifer Majczan: No, students can actually utilize this program to become a coach or trainer later down the road. Again, sometimes students might already be in their preferred position or field, but they just want to utilize this degree to help them get to the next level. But for those that don’t have any background or experience, this is something that could definitely help with getting into those potential positions.
Adam Hanna: Thank you, Jen. Moving on to our next question, this is about resources as students are in the program. Once students are accepted, what additional kinds of resources are available to them?
Jennifer Majczan: You actually have access to a lot of different resources. Obviously, your professors are gonna be one of them, but there’s also a writing center. If you need some guidance or some help on writing a potential paper, that’s where you can utilize that resource. There’s also the learning center for tutoring or training. I’ve mentioned that there is also the career center, resume building, interview prepping, as well as building a portfolio. What happens is I work with students during the admissions process as your enrollment advisor, but eventually, once you start the program, you are eventually handed off to a student support advisor.
They’re available to you, as well, for any admin type of questions, so coaching, mentoring, onboarding, degree planning, as well as registration information. You also have access to the libraries at Adelphi. There’s also – if you’re utilizing any kind of financial aid, the financial services department is available to you. Of course, we do have a 24/7 online help desk if you’re having any technical issues during the program.
Adam Hanna: Thank you, Jen. We do have a few more questions coming in here, so give us a few moments so we can take a look, and we’ll jump right back in. We have a question regarding textbooks. Do you have to purchase the textbooks from the Adelphi University bookstore, or can they be purchased from another location?
Jennifer Majczan: Actually, I always suggest to students, to help keep the cost down, you can either rent your books versus buying them. Renting tends to be a little bit less, but do pay attention when you have to return books. I, myself, being an experienced online student, I’ve rented my textbooks before, and I did not return them to Amazon on time, so I was actually charged for additional fees. Just pay attention to that. You can buy used versus buying brand new. It’s completely up to you, but what I suggest is do pay attention to the ISBN number and to the correct edition. You just want to make sure those things are correct, and you should be good to go. There’s, I know, amazon.com. There’s Barnes & Noble. There’s chegg.com _____ require purchase textbooks from only Adelphi bookstore.
Adam Hanna: Another question regarding the internships. Do you have to wait towards the end of the master’s degree program in order to pursue an internship?
Jennifer Majczan: Actually, you don’t. The reason is because if students are trying to do an internship involving a particular sport, we know that there are sports that have their off seasons and their on seasons. For example, football tends to be a little bit more popular in the fall. Volleyball, baseball tend to be more popular in the spring. If you have opportunities a ways from the internship during your capstone in the program, definitely speak with Professor Ledder. He is the director of the Sport Management program. With approval, you can actually work on your internship prior to ever starting your capstone because we understand – we don’t want students to miss out on an opportunity just because the timing wasn’t exactly right.
Adam Hanna: Next question is are there any prerequisites, in order to apply to the program?
Jennifer Majczan: No, there aren’t. Students only need to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Generally, we do look for students that have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above. However, if you come a little bit below that, that doesn’t mean you’re completely ruled out. That’s where my job comes into play. As your enrollment advisor, I do work with you to help you build a strong avocation. Some examples are in your personal statement, you can address that. Did something happen during your undergrad? If accepted into the program, what would be different if accepted? You can also look into getting additional letters of recommendation. We require two, but maybe if you submit a third or a fourth one, those are some things that could help counterbalance having a little bit lower of a GPA.
Adam Hanna: Thank you, Jen. Our next question is how many hours a week do you need to dedicate to the program?
Jennifer Majczan: It is grad school, so I would say, on an average, you want to plan for about 15 to 20 hours a week. Of course, it could go up or down, but the great thing is you can set up your schedule on what works best for you. Again, whether that’s working on assignments early in the morning, if you’re an early riser, or if your mind tends to be a little bit more active later in the evening, again, that’s completely up to you.
Adam Hanna: Thank you, Jen. Our next question is how many credit hours do you accept for transfer into the program?
Jennifer Majczan: If you’ve started a master’s program, we accept up to nine credit hours. What that process looks like, once a student is accepted into the program, Professor Ledder will actually evaluate your official transcripts to see if there is an 80 percent match. It definitely helps if you have any syllabi from any of those previous courses. You can also submit those, as well, to kind of help see if any transfer credit would be available for you individually.
Adam Hanna: Thank you, Jen. Our next question is am I able to change my concentration if I need to?
Jennifer Majczan: Students can actually change their concentrations as long as it’s before starting the second year of the program. Again, those that pursue the sport marketing and the collegiate athletic administration, you’re taking the same exact classes in the first year, so your foundation and your core classes. However, once you get into that second year, that’s when you guys are going to your separate tracks. So as long as you make that decision before the end of your first year, you can make that change.
Adam Hanna: Our final question for today – and if we didn’t get to your question, again, a representative from our office will follow up to help address the additional questions you may have – our final question is are there any residency requirements for this program?
Jennifer Majczan: No, actually. The program is 100 percent online. Of course, if you are ever in the area and would like to use the library or attend a campus event or participate in a graduation ceremony, or you want to interact with professors, you’re definitely more than welcome to. There’s no separation between the online students and the ground. Again, if you’re ever in the area, we would love to interact with you.
