There are many career opportunities within the world of intercollegiate sport. Most of these opportunities will fall within three interconnected professional settings: university and college campuses; national governing bodies, such as the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA; and conference offices, such as the Big Ten, Big 12 and Southeastern Conference. The jobs range from entry-level office workers to higher-level conference commissioners and athletic directors. Offered through the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, the online Master of Science in Sport Management is comprised of two foundation courses, four core courses, five specialization courses and a capstone for a total of 36 credits. The capstone course is provided in lieu of a residency to offer you the greatest possible degree of scheduling flexibility. The program is designed for completion in six semesters over the span of two years. You may choose a specialization in Sport Marketing or Collegiate Athletic Administration.

Greg Letter

Greg Letter is currently an Associate Professor and Program Director of the undergraduate and graduate Sport Management programs at Adelphi University. Prior to his seven years at Adelphi University, he was an Assistant Professor and Program Director of the undergraduate Sport Communication and graduate Sport Administration programs at Mississippi State University for three years and an Assistant Professor and Program Director of the undergraduate Sport Management and Sport Management MBA program at Webber International University for one year. Major responsibilities included teaching, curriculum review & development, marketing programs, internship placement, community outreach & service as well as alumni tracking & relations.

Greg earned his PhD in Administration & Teaching with a concentration in Sport Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) in 2001. Prior to becoming a professor, he spent roughly four years as a graduate assistant under the Vice President of Administrative Affairs and two years as a graduate teaching assistant in Sport Administration program at USM. He also spent time in sporting goods retail management at Jumbo Sports (Ms), three years of marketing and management experience as well as minority ownership of Independence Brewing Company (Phila, Pa.), and roughly five years of teaching and coaching experience in Philadelphia School District, Montgomery County School District (Pa) and St Aloysius Academy in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

Christopher A. Toften

Christopher A. Toften is a 16-year IT professional focusing on help desk and customer support. As an Administrator, he focuses on resolving hardware and software trouble calls, generating trouble reports in Footprints Work Order System and forwarding them to the appropriate people, and providing software manuals workshops provided for students, faculty, and administration.

Additionally, he works as a Computer Training Specialist and Adjunct Professor. As a Computer Training Specialist, his responsibilities include preparing class material including manuals, online documentation and creating video instruction used for and teaching classes in Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010, Google Apps, and Website Design

As an Adjunct Professor, he has been instructing Sports Management and Computer Applications for eight years. The focus of the class is to provide students with a technical background of related computer applications in the field of sports management. The topics covered range from the students learning about the entire Microsoft Office software package and how to apply the programs to practical projects they will experience while they are working in the field. As an example, students learn how to create and design templates of a business letter and fax cover sheet. They learn how to save this as a template so they can reuse this preformatted document to reduce time performing repetitive tasks.

John Garrett

John Garrett is currently the Associate Athletic Director/ Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Hunter College in New York City. He started at Hunter in April of 2013 after 8 years at SUNY Old Westbury. As an Associate Athletic Director John oversees the daily operation of the Intramurals, Recreation and Fitness program for the 23,000 students at Hunter. As well as daily support of the 18 Division III varsity sports within the athletic Department. John is also the Head Women’s Basketball coach a position added in May of 2014, he is responsible for all aspects of the Division III Basketball program that competes in the CUNYAC Conference.

Prior to Hunter College Garrett worked at SUNY Old Westbury from the Fall of 2004- 2012 serving in a variety of roles that included but were not limited to Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach, Equipment Manager, Coordinator of Athletic Operations and Assistant Athletic Director of Budget and Operations. Once completing his Master’s degree Garrett took on a more expansive administration role and for the last 2 years at Old Westbury he oversaw the daily operation of the Athletic Budget, Facilities and all scheduling.

Garrett completed an undergraduate degree in History from Marist College in 2003, teaching High School History and Coaching Girls Varsity Volleyball, Boy Varsity Basketball and Boys Varsity baseball at Oakwood Friends School in 03-04. He then went to Old Westbury and enrolled in Adelphi’s Sports Management program in January of 2005, completing his Masters in 2006. Garrett has been teaching Athletic Administration as an adjunct at Adelphi since 2012.

Adam Siepiola

Adam Siepiola is in his 11th year at Adelphi and his second as Associate Athletic Director for External Relations. He is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Athletic Media Relations Department as well as coordinating the Hall of Fame Dinner, acting as Executive Director of the Panther Club and overseeing all development activities for the Department of Athletics.

Siepiola’s main Athletic Media Relations responsibilities are overseeing the management of the athletic website,, producing press releases, videos and content for each of Adelphi’s teams. As a director of External Relations, Siepiola has had responsibilities in all NCAA tournaments that Adelphi has hosted, including acting as the Tournament Manager for the NCAA Division II and Division III Women’s Lacrosse Final Four in 2011.

In his role as the Executive Director of the Panther Club, Adelphi Athletics fundraising arm, Siepiola has helped to raise over $200,000 in the past two years and helped the Panther Club lend it’s support to the Fall Kick-Off Cocktail Reception, the Janet L. Ficke Golf Outing and the Hall of Fame Dinner.

In addition, Siepiola was the coordinator and director of the Adelphi Athletics Hall of Fame Dinner for the past three years, bringing over 200 friends, supporters and alumni back to campus to honor former student-athletes, coaches and teams.

In the spring of 2012, Siepiola joined the Sports Management program as an adjunct professor, teaching Sports Communications and Media Relations for each of the past three years. In the Fall he will add, Sports Public Relations to his list of teaching assignments.

A 2003 graduate of St. John Fisher College, Siepiola obtained a BS in Sports Studies and was a two year varsity letterwinner for the men’s lacrosse team. He also earned an MBA from Adelphi University in Management in August of 2012.

Siepiola is currently a member of the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA) and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference – Sports Information Directors of America (ECAC-SIDA) and currently makes his home in Mineola, New York.

Dr. Jaime Orejan

Dr. Jaime Orejan has been a professor of sport management at Winston Salem State University, Elon University, Desales University, Loras College, and The University of Southern Mississippi. He has also taught online at Saint Leo University, and was the coordinator of the online sport management master in Spanish at West Virginia University. His practical experience has included the management and organization of club sports as well as the management and organization of collegiate intramural sports. He also coached soccer for 20 plus years.

Dr. Orejan’s work during the last few years has focused on the management and marketing of soccer in the United States. His research is concentrated in the management and marketing of the US Soccer Federation (USSF) and Major League Soccer (MLS). Another aspect of his research interests focuses in the history of soccer and the different varieties of football worldwide.

A third area of his research interest is the importance of cultural understanding in marketing and management of sport, entertainment, travel and tourism, and the leisure industry in general, including the value of second language acquisition in this ever growing global economy.

Professionally, Dr. Orejan has been involved with the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) where he served in the curriculum development committee, and is a member of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), where he served on the NASPE/NASSM national program approval review board. Currently he is a member of the new accrediting board COSMA. He is also a member of the Sport Marketing Association (SMA), and served on the board of directors of the Latin-American Sport Management Association (ALGEDE). Moreover, he has presented and published research projects at the national and international level. Dr. Orejan has also contributed substantially in committee service and volunteer service to: the Red Cross, United Way, and Women Sports Foundation, among other professional organizations.
